  • Design rooms with efficiency and radiation safety in mind in accordance with nationally recognized standards,
  • Have shielding requirements calculated by a qualified physicist.
  • Register installed system with the state radiation control programs.
  • Have equipment inspected by qualified physicist prior to use with patients.
  • Perform quality control procedures recommended by the manufacturer on a scheduled basis. Maintain documentation of the QC procedures and corrective action taken.
  • Follow good radiation safety practices (ALARA). Provide annual training for all employees working in radiation areas.

Advice for Missouri

Check state radiation control rules by reading the website for the  Missouri Radiation Control Program.

Items Required by Missouri Regulations

  • Registration of x-ray systems is required.  This must be done when the equipment is installed and renewed every 2 years.  Forms are available on the MRCP website.  It is better to communicate with the MRCP via email MRCP@health.mo.gov.  Make sure they have your current email address for communication.
  • Maintain a radiation exposure monitoring program for people that work in radiation areas.
  • New: Beginning in 2014, a change in an existing Missouri rule requires that you must have a Qualified Expert in radiation safety perform a periodic radiation safety survey. Only medical physics professionals  registered and approved by the Department of Health and Senior Services can perform these surveys. ISS, Inc., is the first team to achieve this Qualified Expert status.

Recommended but not required by Missouri:

  • Have shielding requirements calculated by a qualified physicist. It is not required to submit the calculation for state review, but a copy may be requested upon registration of the x-ray system.
  • Have equipment inspected by qualified physicist prior to use with patients.
  • Perform quality control procedures appropriate to your operation on a scheduled basis. Maintain documentation of everything.
  • Follow good radiation safety practices (ALARA) and provide annual training for all employees working in radiation areas.
  • Have equipment inspected annually by qualified physicist. Correct all problems as soon as possible. Keep service records to show you corrected the problem.
